Massive NY Christmas Display Goes Dark for ’09

A 20-year Christmas tradition is about to go dark in New York. With more than 1 million lights, the huge display has been an annual draw that cheered thousands and raised money for charity. Andrew Spadafora, a retired truck driver, says it will break his heart to keep the 900-piece display in storage but the Long Island family is still paying off the $41,000 tab racked up last season and cannot afford the 2009 season if they cannot come up with the funds by Labor Day.

News over the weekend has generated dozens of phone calls to Spadafora — but no donations so far.
